REVIEW : Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James

Practice Makes Perfect

Author     : Julie James
Publisher  : Indonesia - Elexmedia
                  US - Berkeley Sensation
Source     : Bought
Pages       : 408

Summary from Goodreads :
When it comes to the law of attraction, there are no rules. The battle between the sexes is about to make these two lawyers hot under the collar. Opposites collide when two lawyers try to make partner at the same firm. Payton Kendall is a feminist to the bone. Cocky J.D. Jameson was born privileged. But when they're asked to join forces on a major case, they gain a newfound awareness of each other's personal assets. The partnership spot will be offered to only one of them, though. The competition heats up. Sparks fly. Let the games begin.

Another delightful Contemporary Romance from Julie James and I enjoyed it so much! I really like enemy-becomes-lover story and although it took a bit time to catch up with Payton and J.D. than with Taylor and Jason from Just The Sexiest Man Alive (it's still my most favorite of her novel so far =P), I admitted they're the most adorable, funniest couple ever from all CR novels I've read. Both of them are professionals and successful, people with good career but also very childish when they have to dealing with each other feeling. It was very refreshing and I got a good laugh reading how adults could act in such a cute way =D.

J.D and Payton have been in a 'secret' competition for 8 years, they've been doing their best in handling many cases, to prove they are the best partner candidates for the firm they work on. We can say that J.D is lucky enough to be born as a rich man, which means he's more reliable, has more privilege and knows many prestigious places, also seems getting his success very easily. Payton who can't accept it has been working hard to show that woman also can do as good, or even better than man, that she can't be lose from a spoiled, cocky rich bastard like J.D. Then one day their competition becomes real, and here comes all hillarious moments in order to get a chance filling only one partner seat, a major change of previous plan that stated they both would be partners at their firm. Both J.D and Payton (note : they thought they've been hating each other) have to team up, to lure a potential client, and the one who gave the most contribution would be a winner. At first, because each J.D and Payton are very desired to win, they do almost everything, in clean or even dirty and childish way to gain the victory. But as time goes by, as they spend times together more than they had before and know their real selves and condition, they finally fall in love harder to each other, which brings more confusion how to decide both of their future.

There was a LOT of hillarious moments and sarcastic banters that made me laughing so hard, especially when I read about their adult version of kiddies fight, you know something like "I have to come earlier than him/her" then something like "a simple threat (broke a girl's heel) created a very bad outcome (ripped skirt, lol, God poor Payton!), and the stake was really high (your perfect image and dignity, ouch!)" and then revenge was decided, and so on. But since they're adults, they can handle it professionally and still (hardly) manage to apologize. I also loved the romance, absolutely not one of an instant love making and it has to pass through a long journey filled with lots of (hillarious) moments. To be honest, although I more than just enjoyed their fights, I found it's a bit ridiculous how they finally admit they've been in love with each other after spent TOO MANY YEARS, because of J.D's childish's reason. But I think that's a part of it's charm. Speaking about adult scenes, well, it was just one, steamier than JTSMA but definitely not overwhelming, even James did write it in a cute way

Many reviews said J.D and Payton were too different. Yes, they're in different gender and background. But I found they have quite similar characteristic : hard worker, professional, and yes, childish. Being childish can be quite annoying especially if we see it from adults, but because they showdd it at a 'right' time, when they're jurt alone, and it's rather cute =D. So fun and refreshing to see some adults who are professionals, act not too seriously but at the other moment they can act charmingly cute especially in front of someone they love. I still found J.D and Payton are very likable, like most all of James' characters.

Reading this book made me so thankful it might not just me, a grown-up with a little too much 'childish' side buried inside. The ending is really surprising and pleasing, J.D and Payton finally get what they have dreamt for so long, even bigger. If you like funny, happy and 'almost-clean' contemporary romance, you should give this book a try. You won't be disappointed at all!
Oh anyway, one thing kinda bugging my head until now, about what the heck is J.D's real name? Ms. James hid it until the end of story!

Happy reading! =D

REVIEW : Goddess Boot Camp by Tera Lynn Childs

Goddess Boot Camp

Author     : Tera Lynn Childs
Publisher  : Elexmedia
Source     : Bought
Pages       : 386

Summary from Goodreads :
Phoebe, who recently discovered she's a descendant of Nike (the goddess, not the shoe), is finding that supernatural powers come with a crazy learning curve. Her stepfather, headmaster of the Academy for descendants of the Greek gods, has enrolled her at Dynamotheos Development Camp - aka Goddess Boot Camp - with a bunch of ten-year-olds for the summer. Embarrassing as that is, hopefully it'll help her gain control over her powers in time to pass the test of the gods, continue training hard enough to qualify for the Pythian Games, and enjoy her godly boyfriend, Griffin, all while avoiding the ultimate mistake of accidentally misusing powers.

It's another fast-paced myth-inspired heroine's quest that's sure to bring out the goddess in anyone.

Before you read this review, I suggest to read OMG first, because I might write spoilers from it here.

I read Goddess Boot Camp almost right after Oh. My. Gods, so I could relate both of these books. I really enjoyed reading O.M.G, its witty dialogue and Phoebe sarcasm were really amusing and made me giggled alot. Because of that I had high expectation over GBC and really glad it was published while I haven't read O.M.G so I could read them straight. After I finished it, I have to say the first book is still my favorite than this book, although it did quite enjoyable and I still laughed at Phoebe's witty and follish POV.

Phoebe is really busy at this book. She's enrolled to a special camp to help her controlling her overflowing power because she's a close descendant of Nike, the goddess of triumph and gods already kept an eye on her, afraid she would use her power accidentally for her own glory. Moreover what more give her pain is the fact that she would spend her days on that camp with 2 person she dislike the most, Stella and Adara, as her mentors. While Phoebe also has to prepare for Phytian Games with Griffin her boyfriend, she finds out that Griffin lies to her many times and secretly meets Adara without telling her. Like she can't be more busy anymore, someone unknown tells her there's a documentation about her father's execution and she wants to find out more about it, although it's not easy and definitely dangerous.

I did understand that she's absolutely mad, ashamed (because she has to attend the camp for 10 years old young girls), and jealous, but she also slightly becomes irritating, well, like a mad and jealous girl in her age, whines and misjudges everything. At this book too we find that Stella and Adara aren't that bad, especially Stella. She seems sincerely helping Phoebe with her but Phoebe threat her bad at first.
Thankfully, Griffin quite grew on me at this book. He's very good boyfriend for Phoebe (or being a good guy since he dates her), loves and cares about her even when Phoebe ignores him.
We also introduce to some new characters like Xander and Tansy and some campers but I didn't really know them well, except Xander is another mentor, and Tansy is a young girl who also interest on running. When I read Xander name appearing, I was hoping he'd be the third person between Phoebe and Griffin but yeah it didn't happen.

This book is just okay, a really light reading. There's no twisted plots, doesn't force you to think, and I have to say, nothing special in it. I thought once the story would develop and grow more interesting after Phoebe got her power but hm... nothing. Personal matters do develop here, but no for the plot. I just curious does this series only consist 2 books? Because I felt it hasn't ended yet and the mysteries from OMG are still unanswered.
Gonna wait for further information about this series =)

REVIEW : Oh.My.Gods by Tera Lynn Childs

Oh.My.Gods

Author     : Tera Lynn Childs
Publisher  : Elexmedia
Source     : Bought
Pages       : 281

Blurb from Goodreads :
A modern girl's comedic odyssey in a school filled with the descendants of Greek gods.
When Phoebe's mom returns from Greece with a new husband and moves them to an island in the Aegean, Phoebe's plans for her senior year and track season are ancient history. Now she must attend the uberexclusive academy, where admission depends on pedigree, namely, ancestry from Zeus, Hera, and other Greek gods. That's right, they're real, not myth, and their teen descendants are like the classical heroes supersmart and superbeautiful with a few superpowers. And now they're on her track team! Armed only with her Nikes and the will to win, Phoebe races to find her place among the gods.

This is the first Tera Lynn Child book I read and I loved her writing style =D
What did attract me to this novel? I was like "Oh My Gah, it's hot pink!" when I see the side part. I guess it would be cute standing at my shelf. LOL. Many thanks to the publisher here for released it with the original cover. Second is the story. Teenage high school drama mixed with mythology and gods, a bit reminded me to Percy Jackson series, so I gave it a try. And It did as cute as the cover =)

Oh. My. Gods is about a girl, Phoebe Castro, who suddenly has her fate get twisted and changes in one day, when her mom tell her she will re-married again. And because of that she has to moves too far from her recent place at US, to Serfopoula island at The Aegean, Greece, and she finds shocking truth about Zeus and his crew. They aren't just a mythology, moreover they have many descendants, not-too-friendly demigods (half human half god) and Phoebe has to lives with them from now on. Things become more complicated when she falls in love with a descendant of Ares, Griffin, who already has a girlfriend, and she involves with a wicked plan Stella, her step sister made.

I really enjoyed Phoebe's voice, she is funny and sarcastic. I giggled many times of her foolish and funny dialogue. She is very passionate and focus to achieve her dream at the track field, and she does her best for it. And also I was glad Childs made her as a very strong and smart girl. Her demigod friends who have supernatural power sometimes do bully her, and she doesn't hesitate to fight back. It's also very nice to see her awesomely good friends, like Cesca and Nola who are loyal to her, and of course Nicole and Troy, her demigod friends.

The love story between Phoebe and Griffin is a bit lacking for me. We see this story from Phoebe's eyes so we couldn't really know what made Griffin falls in love with her. Griffin acts like a bastard and over-showed his affection toward Adara publicy which made me not really like him. Then suddenly bam! Griffin confesses to Phoebe that he likes her. A bit odd since he didn't show anything related his feeling toward Phoebe before, even he communicates with Phoebe just in a short time, at the track training. Somehow it's better if Phoebe picked Troy instead Griffin, Troy is better and cute. But well, I still enjoyed it though, at least Griffin becomes a better person after he dates Phoebe =)

Overall, Oh.My.Gods is very refreshing and fun, I almost can't put it down so I give it high rating. The story is very light and predictable although there are still some mysteries like who is Nicole's god ancestor xD. So don't expect any twisted storyline, or even compare it to Percy Jackson although it has the same theme and situation, you'll be disappointed.

REVIEW : Just The Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James

Just The Sexiest Man Alive
Author     : Julie James
Publisher  : Elexmedia
Source     : Bought
Pages       : 440 pages

Blurb :
A fabulously fun, romantic comedy from a dynamic new talent.

Nothing fazes Taylor Donovan not in the courtroom and not in her personal life. So when she's assigned to coach People's Sexiest Man Alive for his role in the next big legal drama, she refuses to fall for the Hollywood heartthrob's charms. Even if he is the Jason Andrews

'Just The Sexiest Man Alive'
Yum.
Definitely my favorite chicklit this year because I can re-read it for couple times and never bored of it.

Because read too many paranormal books is not healthy (lol), I searched for contemporary novel to neutralized my mind, and I found this title. At first when I saw this on the Upcoming Release on Elexmedia I was like "Ow, tempting title" but I didn't buy it because I was like "Meh, maybe just another 'meh' adult novel". I just feel tired with some chicklits, sometimes they have more sex scenes than the story itself, sometimes the story is beyond my acceptation, sometimes they're too corny, well, doesn't mean that they're bad, just....a little tired =p. Then, I use Goodreads search engine to take a peek what this book about. And I got fab blurb, good reviews, pretty original cover, they were enough to made me gave a try and.... I LOVE IT!

This novel has everything I love at chicklit kind : light, funny, witty, sarcastic, but also serious and romantic=D. Julie James did an awesome job and I totally fall in love with her writing style. She knows what kind of characters that make us swoon (uh yeah, Jason. I even love his name only). The story flows nicely and at the right pace. James does have a deep knowledge about Law and Hollywood, and how to mixing it into a fabulous love story, since she has worked at those worlds before. One thing, I can enjoy this story more because it almost doesn't have any explicit sex nor kissing scenes (well, only slightly at the end part), and indeed, still very romantic and sweet =D

Taylor Donovan is my favorite heroine type, I just really like how Julie James built her. I love her for being a pretty, confident, smart and strong woman with cool job as a lawyer. Her fail engagement maybe doesn't distract her from her work life but it does traumatize her. It's hard for her to trusts any other man and hesitates to starts a new relationship again. Then one day she's forced to holds a project with Jason Andrews, a Hollywood actor. Jason is not just a Hollywood actor, he's the biggest, hottest, and scandalous actor at his era.
And Jason...oh Jason xD
Because all qualities he has, Jason is friggin' arrogant. But surprisingly he's also very funny, caring and childish at his thirties, he just shows it to everyone he trusts and cares, like Jeremy his BFF and of course, Taylor. I enjoyed and cracked a lot while read his parts and I really-really love him. I always attracted to arrogant and childish heroes, I find them cute. I know something wrong with me, lol.
Their relationship grows slowly but very cutely anf nicely. Taylor doesn't fall easily to Jason and his Hollywood charms. At first she thought she hated him, she kept saying no, even slammed her office door in front of Jason's nose. But then she realizes Jason is more than his actor facade. Jason too at first he thinks Taylor is just the same as every woman he dated or dumped. He's wrong and totally falls for her unique personalities he never find before. You can say although he's the best actor in this world, he tries really hard to get Taylor.

I like the friends too : Jeremy, Kate and Valerie. They're lovable, funny, supportive, really good friends, especially Jeremy. I was once hoped that Jer hooked to Kate or Val, but no further story about it. Hm..too bad :)

This is my first book of Julie James and I NEED MOAR! I have to find some more of her works. Soon I'll get "Something About You", an FBI series. Whoohoo!
So... you like chicklit? You dream to date any Hollywood guy?
Try to read this one =D
