Review :
This book has sat for more than a year on my shelf before I finally read it, and one of those books I decided to buy based on a pretty cover and a feeling that this book might be good. But of course, there was a bit hesitation because I actually had no idea what the story was about, the blurb and trailer didn't say much. I was afraid I wouldn't like this book though my friend loved this book and highly recommend it to me, until I read it myself. I feel really bad for abandoning this book for such a long time because it's REALLY GOOD! REALLY REALLY GOOD. I was glad that 'science fiction' tag is not only a bluff. I enjoyed reading this book so much, even brought my hardcover copy to my office (which obviously added a trouble lifting my heavy bag) because I wanted to know what would happen next. Well-paced and unpredictable, jam-packed with action and high stakes, with emotional, beautiful writing and engaging characters that will make you love them each page!

At first I was confused where the sci-fi and countdown-to-the-end-of-the-world part in this book, though it's still highly entertaining for me. At early pages we learn more about Janelle and her ordinary yet tough life. Also, it seemed more like criminal story because Janelle put a lot interest on her father's cases, and the last one is quite bizarre, involved a kind of bio-terrorism which put quite a disturbing image in my head. But then everything gets more exciting and becomes clear one by one after Janelle gets hit by a truck from nowhere, literally dead and gets resurrected by a mysterious boy named Ben Michaels. What's the connection between Ben Michaels, sort of bio-terrorism, and apocalypse? This book made me guessing a lot and yes, unpredictable. I really didn't see them coming and I really really LOVED that part =D

Since the start, I already fell in love with Janelle. I emotionally touched by her raw voice and thoughts, I easily connected to her interesting personality. She doesn't fake how tiring her life is and act a lot like normal girl who faces the same thing in the real world, still she love her family so much and takes a good care of them even her bipolar mother. Thankfully she's also surrounded by awesome people like her FBI father, her little brother Jared, and her best friend Alex and Cecily who helps her going through. It makes her grows a lot maturer and stronger, a bit cynical and sarcastic, also has a big curiosity because of her father influence. And of course there's Ben Michaels, the tragic beauty, but lovely Ben Michaels. I was so touched by everything he does for his friends and especially for Janelle *melting*. I think he's one of unique hero I've known and he's very complicated, not include his real identity, and I already add him to my too-long book-boyfriend list =D.
The secondary characters who keep showing up are very likable as well, like Jared, Struz, Cecily, Elijah and the others. They have their own unique personality that enrich the story. And just a warning, if you like one of them, just prepare your heart to badly break later. The ending part is so heart-breaking it brought tears on me, and made me want to start reading Unbreakable right away!

Overall, if you are a fan TV series like 24, Fringe, X-Files or Veronica Mars (I just copy it from everywhere else. I actually haven't watch any of them, yeah I'm so lame =_=), a fan of Sci-fi, Criminal and even Dystopia with great main characters, and don't mind reading "F" word that scatters like everywhere, you really don't want to miss this series! Romance doesn't take a big part in this book, remind you, but in my opinion, for this book small portion doesn't lessen the meaning =). I even think to start hunting some of TV series above because of this book ;p. Thank you Liz Norris for writing such an amazing series!

Happy reading! =)

REVIEW : The Host by Stephenie Meyer

The Host

Author      : Stephenie Meyer
Publisher   :
U.S : Little Brown and Company
Indonesia : Gramedia Pustaka Utama
Source      : Bought
Pages        : 770 (Paperback)

Summary from Goodreads :
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

YIPPIE!
I'm soooo happy I could fulfil my very first resolution of this year, to finish this book before the movie comes out! =D
(P.S : ignore the fact that I post this later than the movie, I was procrastinating like usual *poke*)

Before, I was kind of intimidated by the thickness of this book which is over 700 for translation version, wew! I was afraid I could not enjoy this book, because somehow I had a little prejudice of stories about alien and I found the summary was not really interesting for me. But in the end I successfully finished this book and wow, I totally LOVED this! Surprisingly I still could enjoy Stephenie Meyer's writing after I haven't read any from her for a while. The story is really original, moves in slow rhythm but I found it flows very nicely and thoroughly. The thickness is a proof that Meyer put her best effort, passion and totality into this book, both of the setting and the characters she made, and I appreciated it a lot. Beside the light sci-fi elements that I believe could be enjoyed by everyone, I loved that this book explores more about the characters, emotions and relationship between them. Also it brings quite an irony image, how if even a certain alien race behaves more human than human themselves. They even more civilized and have a lot good side that human almost loss these days until we actually think maybe they could fix this world. Very provoking thoughts but really fascinating as well!

I loved that this book is not merely a simple love story about two girls that fight over a guy, I had been really afraid of it. Gladly it is very unique, and more complicated than that and I actually enjoyed it and happy with how it's solved. Every characters in this book are very distinct and unique, even side characters and I really enjoyed to know more about each of them. Melanie probably has strong voices but sometimes I got annoyed with her. Instead, I loved Wanda because she has loads of human goodness inside her. I also loved to read how she inspires her surrounding, grows to love and to be loved by people, humans around her and how she develops a sweet relationship with Ian. And I'm totally team Ian, by the way ;)

Sadly, I think this book is not one of 'everybody must like' type book. We see a lot dystopia with fast-pace or action-packed stories these days and those who expect this book is one of it, they would be (really) disappointed. But this book is worth a try, especially for those who love story with a lot developments, emotional, meaningful and inspiring reading and probably also those who almost lost faith in Stephenie Meyer's because I think this book is quite different from Twilight and it's better, a lot.
From the end scene, this book could be a stand-alone, but I would be really happy if Meyer decides to continue this great series! =)

Happy reading, peeps! ;)

REVIEW : Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Grave Mercy

Author      : Robin LaFevers
Publisher   : Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Source      : Bought
Pages        : 549 (Hardback)

Summary from Goodreads :
Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Book trailer :

Review :
I was so excited to read Grave Mercy since it was just a pretty cover, somehow I knew I would love it because of the historical background and the idea about a nun being an assassin, in order to serve the god of Death. Woah, it sounds really bad-ass. I am always thrilled on the stories that have characters with controversial jobs like assassin, con-men or spy, I curious how the author would do the story with it. And heck yeah, my feeling was right. I loved this book! I thought I would find another controversial thing regard to certain religion since it related to 'nun' and 'convent' and 'god of death, it made me felt both anxious and excited, but I was wrong and LaFevers was wise enough to make the topic quite 'general' and a bit fantastical. Though I only had an access to this book for just several hours at night, I was always eager to continue reading, to know what would have happened next.

Not like an average YA series, Grave Mercy is quite complicated. Generally it's about Ismae's adventure to fulfil assignments from god of Death, takes down everyone who is 'marked' by the Death, means he/she is a traitor of the high court of Brittany (the reason why Death kind of takes a side to the Great Brittany was one that somehow bugging me). But then after Ismae successfully infiltrates into the courts, thanks to Gavriel Duval, an illegitimate son of the late Duke and a French whore, she is inevitably involved in a twisted politic intrigue and conspiracies. Moreover things become more complicated to her when she's undeniably attracted to someone who might be her next assignment to be eliminated and soon she starts to questioning the reliable of the 'mark' and the convent of Death itself.

Practically this book is mostly about politic intrigue and conspiracy and it's quite a long read and in my case, I sometimes met some difficulties to keep up with the story, sometimes I forgot things; although it amazed me that there was no single wasted scene in this book. So probably this book would not too suitable for those who seeks for light reading.  I occasionally enjoy historical fiction so it was not really hard for me to like, even love this book. I think the story is quite deep and developed very well, the politic and the guessing part were really fascinating for me.

Talking about the characters and relationship between them, I really adored both Ismae and Duval. Ismae is one brilliant and strong heroine, reading about her was really interesting. Although she's very loyal to her convent and especially god of Death, she's also quite open-minded to every possibilities and has quite faith to her own heart about what is right and wrong. Then there's Duval. Gavriel Duval, wow, what a gorgeous name! The same gorgeous as himself =D. Duval is kind of perfect, fine and chivalrous gentleman you'd find on historical fiction and he has so many honorable qualities in him. He's wise and smart enough to be more cautious, even about Ismae at first. He's also very loyal to his country and his family, I love seeing his affection towards her younger half-sister and to his mother though it's rather in cold way.
There's definitely no insta-love, instead Ismae and Duval spend a lot of time together to finally realize they love each other. I really loved that sometimes they both put down their tensity and go cute bickering, or then Duval can be really sweet and respectful to Ismae. They're really matching in many ways.

Considering the book's heavy and intriguing content though it's not too explicit, Grave Mercy probably would be suitable for older Young Adult. I really recommend this book to everyone who could enjoy historical fiction with subtle yet fast pace, intriguing politics with fantasy twist and slow but deep romance development between two main characters. Now I really can't wait to read the sequel, Dark Triumph, which is out this April.

Happy reading, guys! =)

REVIEW : City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls

Author      : Cassandra Clare
Publisher   : Margaret K. McElderry Books
Source      : Bought
Pages        : 534 (Hardcover)

Summary from Goodreads :
The New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon.

Can the lost be reclaimed? What price is too high to pay for love? Who can be trusted when sin and salvation collide?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge.

Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

While I write this review, I assume you guys have read already or at least warned about how City of Fallen Angel ended, because it's REALLY HARD to write this down without spoiling a bit.

I prepared myself a bit longer to read this book, in other word I was letting it stay too long on my shelf which is very funny because I was literally anxiously biting my nail when this book was still on its way *facepalm*. Although I really love this series too much, I was seriously afraid of what I would find inside this book, you know what I mean if you already read City of Fallen Angel. Then finally I gathered my guts to pick it out from my shelf aaaaaand... I was so glad it's still amazing like before, not really gripping because I still could put it down and getting distracted by other things and I took a long time to finish this book, but still it's amazing. I know that something really really BIG is missing here (and that kind of made me sad) but I still could manage to enjoy this book.

The point of this book is a process to get Jace back to the Team Good after he has vanished along with Sebastian's body for some weeks after CoFA's ending. We still can find him, but for some reasons, Jace we see here is not really the old Jace we've known. Because of that circumstances, we can say that Jace isn't the main character in this book, for now. In one side that's a big loss, especially for those who have been loving him since the first 3 books. I did feel the same way. I really miss his old self which is carefree and crackingly sarcastic. But on the other side, I was happy because because Clare gave her secondary characters to shine and make us love or hate and understand them more than before, like Simon, Isabelle, Alec, Magnus, Kyle, Maia, and even Sebastian.

I think I definitely adore Clary now. She's smart, very determined, impulsive and brave, even willing risk her own life to save Jace. I was beyond relief that Jace's love to Clary is so big and nothing can change it. Their love scenes are still sweet and sizzlin' hot but still, I really missed their witty and sarcastic banters.
Characters that also quite stand out are Simon and Isabelle. Simon seems like the one who brings the light with his jokes, well, with Magnus actually. I always love Simon, he's still a faithful and funny best-boy-friend for Clary (how I envy her for him) and I was silently rooting him for developing his relationship with Isabelle.
We get a chance to know more about Sebastian here, and honestly the more I knew him, the more I wanted to pity him. 'What if' questions kept popping in my mind and I was like assuring myself that he actually could be a good guy. But well, I can tell that he's absolutely an evil guy.

I also found that Clare shows the connection between Mortal Instruments world and Infernal Devices's and they made the whole Shadowhunter world more fun for me! =D. There are plenty ID's things scattering inside some chapters beside we already have known, and even there's one character that makes me wondering who is him until now. I've read some prediction from people out there but yet we still have to know the truth on next book.

City of Lost Soul, although somehow it's not as good as the previous es, is still a great sequel. It has generally very satisfying ending (I literally sighed a relief because of this =D) although something surprising (or probably heartbreaking) also happens. I won't tell what it is, just, well, be aware =). For Indonesian fellows, we have to be proud because Clare put us in her acknowledgement, and she makes us having a STRONG connection with Magnus. He has our blood guys, even says 'aku cinta kamu' (which means 'i love you') although it's for other condition. I did feel great after Magnus said it. XD
I already can't wait to get the last book, City of Heavenly Fire, how Clare conclude this awesome series of her. So guys, you have to read this soon, and for those who haven't start this series yet, you need to so you can feel how awesome this series is! =D

Happy reading! ;)

REVIEW : Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James

Practice Makes Perfect

Author     : Julie James
Publisher  : Indonesia - Elexmedia
                  US - Berkeley Sensation
Source     : Bought
Pages       : 408

Summary from Goodreads :
When it comes to the law of attraction, there are no rules. The battle between the sexes is about to make these two lawyers hot under the collar. Opposites collide when two lawyers try to make partner at the same firm. Payton Kendall is a feminist to the bone. Cocky J.D. Jameson was born privileged. But when they're asked to join forces on a major case, they gain a newfound awareness of each other's personal assets. The partnership spot will be offered to only one of them, though. The competition heats up. Sparks fly. Let the games begin.

Another delightful Contemporary Romance from Julie James and I enjoyed it so much! I really like enemy-becomes-lover story and although it took a bit time to catch up with Payton and J.D. than with Taylor and Jason from Just The Sexiest Man Alive (it's still my most favorite of her novel so far =P), I admitted they're the most adorable, funniest couple ever from all CR novels I've read. Both of them are professionals and successful, people with good career but also very childish when they have to dealing with each other feeling. It was very refreshing and I got a good laugh reading how adults could act in such a cute way =D.

J.D and Payton have been in a 'secret' competition for 8 years, they've been doing their best in handling many cases, to prove they are the best partner candidates for the firm they work on. We can say that J.D is lucky enough to be born as a rich man, which means he's more reliable, has more privilege and knows many prestigious places, also seems getting his success very easily. Payton who can't accept it has been working hard to show that woman also can do as good, or even better than man, that she can't be lose from a spoiled, cocky rich bastard like J.D. Then one day their competition becomes real, and here comes all hillarious moments in order to get a chance filling only one partner seat, a major change of previous plan that stated they both would be partners at their firm. Both J.D and Payton (note : they thought they've been hating each other) have to team up, to lure a potential client, and the one who gave the most contribution would be a winner. At first, because each J.D and Payton are very desired to win, they do almost everything, in clean or even dirty and childish way to gain the victory. But as time goes by, as they spend times together more than they had before and know their real selves and condition, they finally fall in love harder to each other, which brings more confusion how to decide both of their future.

There was a LOT of hillarious moments and sarcastic banters that made me laughing so hard, especially when I read about their adult version of kiddies fight, you know something like "I have to come earlier than him/her" then something like "a simple threat (broke a girl's heel) created a very bad outcome (ripped skirt, lol, God poor Payton!), and the stake was really high (your perfect image and dignity, ouch!)" and then revenge was decided, and so on. But since they're adults, they can handle it professionally and still (hardly) manage to apologize. I also loved the romance, absolutely not one of an instant love making and it has to pass through a long journey filled with lots of (hillarious) moments. To be honest, although I more than just enjoyed their fights, I found it's a bit ridiculous how they finally admit they've been in love with each other after spent TOO MANY YEARS, because of J.D's childish's reason. But I think that's a part of it's charm. Speaking about adult scenes, well, it was just one, steamier than JTSMA but definitely not overwhelming, even James did write it in a cute way

Many reviews said J.D and Payton were too different. Yes, they're in different gender and background. But I found they have quite similar characteristic : hard worker, professional, and yes, childish. Being childish can be quite annoying especially if we see it from adults, but because they showdd it at a 'right' time, when they're jurt alone, and it's rather cute =D. So fun and refreshing to see some adults who are professionals, act not too seriously but at the other moment they can act charmingly cute especially in front of someone they love. I still found J.D and Payton are very likable, like most all of James' characters.

Reading this book made me so thankful it might not just me, a grown-up with a little too much 'childish' side buried inside. The ending is really surprising and pleasing, J.D and Payton finally get what they have dreamt for so long, even bigger. If you like funny, happy and 'almost-clean' contemporary romance, you should give this book a try. You won't be disappointed at all!
Oh anyway, one thing kinda bugging my head until now, about what the heck is J.D's real name? Ms. James hid it until the end of story!

Happy reading! =D

REVIEW : Something About You by Julie James

Something About You

Author     : Julie James
Publisher  : Elexmedia
Source     : Bought
Pages       : 411

Summary from Goodreads :
Of all the hotel rooms rented by all the adulterous politicians in Chicago, female Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde had to choose the one next to 1308, where some hot-and-heavy lovemaking ends with a death. And of all the FBI agents in Illinois, it had to be Special Agent Jack Pallas who gets assigned to this high-profile homicide. The same Jack Pallas who still blames Cameron for a botched crackdown three years ago- and for nearly ruining his career.

Work with Cameron Lynde? Are they kidding? Maybe, Jack thinks, this is some kind of welcome-back prank after his stint away from Chicago. But it's no joke; the pair is going to have to put their rocky past behind them and focus on the case at hand. That is, if they can cut back on the razor-sharp jibes- and smother the flame of their sizzling-hot sexual tension.

Whoa! Another amazing contemporary romance by Julie James =D She's definitely my favorite romance writer, along with Lisa Kleypas! I really love her writing style after reading Just The Sexiest Man Alive, and when I saw this on upcoming release I was like HOOORAY 8D, and immediately rushed to a bookstore to get it and this book still amazed me with smart characters, witty dialogue and yeah, more but enough steamy romance that I didn't find on JTSMA (and not complain though =p)

Something About You combines 2 themes I love, romance and crime thriller, and still inserting funny-sexy dialogues and sarcasm. Although it's not really that suspenseful and there's a part when the story goes from the criminal's side (so we know why he did that), it's still quite enjoyable for me. The characters are mostly smart and I never bored of reading smart people, especially a combination of attorney and FBI agent, damn wicked~ xD
Cameron Lynde is a female Assistant U.S. Attorney ; full of confidence, smart, bold and a successful one. But still, she's just an ordinary woman who need protection when one day she accidentally became an ear-witness of homicide and she would be the next target because of it. Then accidentally too, Jack Pallas, a brooding-hot FBI agent who just came back from his 'exile' is one who takes a responsibility to this case. And their hatred to each other is mutual because of certain situation in the past.

I like Cameron, although she's a 'stand-alone' type she doesn't fake herself and admit she needs help, even from her enemy (Jack Pallas) and although Cameron has Jack protected her, she also smart and willing to sacrifice herself to protect him. They both are really mutually at many things : hate, protection and love. Jack is a swoooooon worthy alpha-male : tall, dark, handsome and dangerous . He's a 'legendary' FBI agent and work professionally. But with Cameron, he also very protective, both from the criminal and other men. I like Cameron and Jack interaction, misunderstanding cause them hating each other, but slowly they clear them and reconcile (some with quite smutty way, lol). Not like JTSMA which almost doesn't have any single make love scenes, this book has it, quite steamy and sweet but with enough portion so it doesn't look 'meh' to me. I'm so glad although this is romance genre, it's not too much focusing in sex scene and we also can enjoy the relationship development between Cameron and Jack. Also don't forget about the besties : Amy, Collin, and Wilkins. They also sparks this story with their witty-ness and warm friendship. I mesmerized by Collin many times and hoping I can have a guy friend who willing to cook me delicious meal like Collin does =D.

I think Julie James will always write a romance story I like the most. If you like Contemporary Romance with intriguing story, smart-sarcastic-funny characters, and proportional make-up scenes, you should read this book!
Now I really can't wait to read other book of her, like Practice Makes Perfect or A Lot Like Love. I hope they'll be published here soon! =D

REVIEW : City of Fallen Angel by Cassandra Clare

City of Fallen Angel (The Mortal Instruments #4)
Author              : Cassandra Clare
Publisher           : UFUK (Indonesia)
Page                 : 580

Blurb :
City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can — training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace. As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters, they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever.
(Warning, may contain spoiler ;9)
After pre-ordered this book from the publisher, finally i got this right before Eid Mubarak days off and that surprised me yet made me so happy. I couldn't wait to read the next book of this amazing series but also a bit afraid because of many negative reviews of this book. I read it in 3 days (a while ago, but just wrote the review =p) and hey, I still loved and enjoyed this book as the previous three.

I understand why some people feel bad about this book, because the lovely Jace seems push aside and become very frustating here. I did too, believe me.
Poor Jace, with all uncertain things around him like his identity (Jace Lightwood-Wayland-Herondale-Mongersten?) and his weird and horrified dreams. Also even though Jace started to stayed away from Clary I felt his relationship with Clary became more intense here. Every time he met Clary, he mostly grabbed and made out with her. Although my dirty mind still enjoy it, i missed their cute relationship at previous 3 books /:

All Jace-Clary frustating parts were healed by some side characters.
I definitely loves Simon here, who struggled with Cain's mark which made him unbeatable, and how he 'dated' 2 girls at the same time, Isabelle and Maia. Kyle Jordan's appearance should clear Simon's two timing (who's Jordan? Just read City of Ashes/Glass to know who is he =p) and I hope Simon will end with Isabelle. This couple had more chemistry before.

Jace and Simon also developed their relation here. I love sarcasm comments between them, especially that 'mango' thing. Lol that made me laughed so hard xD

And what the heck with THAT ending??! I already had a prediction about Sebastian's mysterious death, without witnessing his body of course we also can assume he's still alive, but.... *wiping sweats*
Clare seriously loves to torture us and now i desperately can not wait for City of Lost Soul ;A; *starting to counting months*

Okay soooo.... I should give this book 4.5 star. Good, yet a bit frustating.
Next, so can't wait for Clockwork Prince!
