REVIEW : Firelight by Sophie Jordan

Firelight

Author      : Sophie Jordan
Publisher   :
U.S. : HarperCollins
Indonesha : Atria
Source      : Bought
Pages        : 200

Summary from Goodreads :
A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki, a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.

Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

Cover Glimpse :
I have to say I'm really disappointed with the cover of translation version, since the first thing that made me want to read this book is the original cover.

2cents :
I was pretty excited and wanted to read Firelight so bad because, well, despite being dragged by some reviews, the premise sounds really unique about a girl who is dragon-shape-shifter. I was thinking like : "wow, DRAGON GIRL? This gonna be a bad-ass story!" or something like that. And I was captivated by the original cover which is so pretty and really match to the story perfectly (girl's face with slightly scales and dragon eyes, bad-ass!!!). One day I realized one of publisher here released the translation version of this book, not wasting time abruptly I bought it of course and as my bad habit, I put it on the shelf for quite a long time. Then at one day because of a guilt (lol) I decided to read it and... well... I have to say I was kinda... disappointed. No, it doesn't mean the story is that bad, interesting though, but maybe my expectation was a little too high /:.

To be honest, I expected this book would have a 'fiercer' storyline or some good action scenes since, well, you get the word 'dragon', but I didn't get it. I still appreciate what Sophie Jordan decided, but in my opinion, the story could be developed to be more intriguing and interesting, more than just emphasizing the teen drama-like and love story only. I felt the story just move around, not forward. Many people said the story is slightly like Twilight and well, I realized it too. But so strange, I did enjoy and love Twilight very much. And this one? I don't hate it nor love it because it leaves no remarkable thing at me. Just too bad.

Jacinda has a admirable characteristic actually. She's knows well about who she is and she loves her family so much. She goes through the hardship because she doesn't want to let down her mother despite of her longing to stay as herself and I could imagine how hard it is. But as I tried hard to understand her circumstances, I found it was tiring to read all her whines and her back-and-forth over some decisions she has made. Her inconsistency almost stopped me from reading this book. Once she decides one thing, then in the end she loses it. It's like reading the same thing over and over again until I almost couldn't hold my rage like "GIRL IF YOU REALLY WANT IT JUST GO AND GET LOST, OK". Really, I was like that almost for 3/4 book.

The love line between Jacinda and Will is an example of insta-love and a bit shallow for me. Will does do several good things to Jacinda but I didn't get it why in sudden she falls in love with Will although she barely know about him. Usually I always like a hero with mysterious and dangerous feeling like Will, and sometimes he does stalking a girl he likes. But strange, I feel nothing to him. Will still doesn't impress me much and his character isn't really stand out. I was more intrigue with Cassian who shows up just a moment but leave deep impression with his strong character as the alpha-male and the third person between Jacinda and Will.

Overall, don't let my 2cent bother you. I might be disappointed with this book, but you who love light romance and a Twihard perhaps, might not. The idea is brilliant, I have to tell, because at first I quite interested with the explanation about Draki community and the power of each kind. But then most of the rest was like a turning down, because it was far from I've imagined. I'll read Vanished though, because nevertheless I still curious about what happen next on Jacinda, her twin sister Tamra, Will and Cassian.
I think you should try to read this because it offers a different idea of paranormal story (although the love story seems really common these days). Happy reading! =)

REVIEW : Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid Series #1)

Author     : Richelle Mead
Publisher  : Dastan (Indonesia)
Pages      :
Source    : Bought

Blurb :
Succubus (n.) An alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men. Pathetic (adj.) A succubus with great shoes and no social life. See: Georgina Kincaid.
When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants. The wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid’s life is far less exotic. Her boss is a middle-management demon with a thing for John Cusack movies. Her immortal best friends haven’t stopped teasing her about the time she shape-shifted into the Demon Goddess get-up complete with whip and wings. And she can’t have a decent date without sucking away part of the guy’s life. At least there’s her day job at a local bookstore—free books, all the white chocolate mochas she can drink, and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can’t.

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle’s demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won’t help because Georgina’s about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny…

I bought this book because I'm Richelle Mead's fans. I love Vampire Academy so much, and heard many good reviews about this series too so I give it a try. And yeah, quite good, although not as good as vampire academy =p.

Georgina Kincaid once was a mortal, until someday she made a big mistake and to fixed all damages she has done, she sold her soul to hell and she became a succubus, a demon who allures men and suck their soul.
But Georgina is different from other succubus. She still holds her humanity and can't forget her past. She doesn't seduce any men, just those who have low life like drug users, cheaters, or even helpless single geeks (lol). She doesn't date good guys because she cannot let their soul sucked and destroyed. She enjoys her 'normal' attractive appearance and more over she's a nerd, loves books and works normally like other woman on a bookstore. She also loves her friends, so when someone or something seems hunting downloaders around her, she strives to finds out who or what it is. This is made Georgina likeable and the most kind succubus in this world =p.

When finally she meets Seth Mortensen, a geeky-cute-but-sexy writer she admires for a long time, who also seems interest at her, she also meets another mesmerizing guy named Roman. She is torn apart between Seth and Roman because although she like Seth, Roman shows more attention and admiration to her and she herself feels she's unworthy for someone like Seth. And yeah... for a moment she dates Roman even sleep with him.
This do disturb a bit. Despite of her profession as a succubus, she seems easily fall for any guy who adores her, which makes her a bit...cheap (oh wow so harsh xD). Even her past showed it too.
I don't really enjoy her 'side love story', I even don't feel sympathy for her pitiful love life because it's her own fault. Somehow I feel Seth is too good for her, and he is so awesome to still love her no matter what she is and her doing.

Sooooooo.... 3 stars. Overall this book is enjoyable, a well mixture of paranormal-adult-love-action, although Georgina still isn't my favorite but Seth and Jerome absolutely my favorite. Can't wait to see him more at next books.

Warning : This book contains some religion issues. You may find some things are not appropriate with what you believe. But if you could put it aside and take it just as a fiction, you may enjoy this like I do =) And of course because it's adult novel, you may find a lot steamy scenes =). Me? Oh, I already reach ages to read this kind of things. LOL

REVIEW : Blue Blood by Melissa de la Cruz

Blue Blood (Book #1)
Author              : Melissa de la Cruz
Publisher           : GAGAS Media (Indonesia)

Blurb from melissa-delacruz.com :
Within New York City's most elite families, there lurks a secret society of celebrated Americans whose ancestors sailed on the Mayflower. They are the powerful and the wealthy—and in fact, they are not human. They are the Blue Bloods, an ancient group of vampires.
Schuyler Van Alen has never fit in at Duchesne, her prestigious New York City private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapidated mansion. Schuyler is a loner and happy that way.
But when she turns fifteen, Schuyler's life changes dramatically. She has a mosaic of blue veins on her arms, and craves raw meat. The death of a popular girl from Duchesne is surrounded by a mystery that haunts her. And strangest off all, Jack Force, the most popular boy in school, is showing a sudden interest in her.
Schuyler wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger?
Steeped in vampire lore and set against the glittery backdrop of New York City, Blue Bloods will be devoured by fans of Melissa de la Cruz.
I was expecting a good read when i saw this book, with pretty blue cover, 'New York International Best Seller' statement, and thrilling blurb. But after i finished the book, I have to say I'm not really a fan of this book =(
I'm a bit confuse right now how to review it without being 'harsh' (lol) but i'll try.

The idea of the story is awesome actually and i like the idea to make noble-rich-fashionable vamps. But somehow I feel something was lack, the story was jumbling and confusing.
The author emphasized high society lifestyle more than the vampire side itself and that bothered me. Beside fashion related glossarium I got from here (which was pretty good and i enjoyed it, ha!), Blue Bloods teenagers do a lot of parties here and there, clubbing, teens were smoking and drinking at their 15-16 years old boys and girls. It's like 'Gossip Girl', with vampire label in them.
Vampire matter really came out after more than half book, when Cordelia told Schuyler about Silver Blood and that also answered my own question about diary parts that attached between each chapter, after a long read 0_0.

The main character should be Schuyler, but Cruz changed POV in each chapter, mostly from Schuyler, Mimi, and Bliss, and small portion of Jack, and it just a paragraph inserted in other POV. Okay that method can help us to know more about characters but for me, It made Schuyler identity as main character a bit vague, because for me Mimi and Bliss POV were stronger and more interesting than Schuyler.
The love story between characters just like a short make-up term, blood-donor boy/girlfriend, almost incest relationship. I'm a sucker of true love story, so this is a bit dissapointed me. I just keep this positive thinking to make me continue this series and assume as a first book, Cruz didn't reveal much of love stories, especially between Schuyler and Jack.

I give 2,5 star for this book, and yet, still waiting to read the rest of books. Just hope Masquerade will be more better.

Duh, did i write too harsh? xD
